PRETORIA, October 22 – The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) on Monday, arrested two police officers for the murder of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) student Katlego Monareng who died in August.
Ipid’s national spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the detained officers are a captain and a constable.
“The arrest follows a shooting incident which occurred in August at TUT in which Monareng was shot during a protest over [student representative council] SRC elections. At the time, the police alleged that they fired warning shots at the ground with R5 rifles,” said Dlamini.
“The Ipid has concluded its investigation … only two technical reports are outstanding. The suspects will appear at the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court on October 23 on a charge of murder.”
In August, chaotic scenes were witnessed in the Pretoria central business district (CBD) as thousands of TUT students demanded justice for the final year law student who was fatally shot at campus. (ANA)
