JOHANNESBURG, March 13 – A 13-year-old child was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of 19-year-old Mondeor High School pupil, Kulani Mathebula.
“Police in Gauteng made a breakthrough in arresting one suspect involved in the murder of a 19-year-old boy who was killed today, 13 March 2019, at about 07:30am in Mondeor,” said South African Police Services spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela.
“The deceased, who was on his way to school, was attacked and stabbed to death by three other school boys from a nearby school in the area.”
Makhubela said a team of detectives followed up information from the scene, which led them to another school in Mondeor attended by the 13-year-old suspect.
Gauteng provincial police commissioner, lieutenant-general Elias Mawela, welcomed the arrest of the suspect within 24 hours. However, he condemned the killing of Mathebula. Mawela urged the community to work with police to trace the remaining suspects.
“The two outstanding suspects are suspected to be schoolchildren as well. Police are calling for the boys to hand themselves in because the police will not rest until they are arrested.”
Those with information about the whereabouts of the suspects were urged to call their nearest police station or crime stop on 08600 10111. (ANA)
