RUSTENBURG, August 31 – The disbandment of the African National Congress (ANC) provincial executive committee is a historical decision for the North West and the ANC, a political analyst said on Friday.

“It is a very important historical decision for the North West as a province and the ANC in the province. I think it is going to have far-reaching implications for Mr [Supra] Mahumapelo himself and his group, and  I believe he is going to find it more and more difficult to influence political or party political processes in the province,” said Professor Andre Duvenhage from the North West University, Potchefstroom Campus.

“It was a good decision to the advantage of the Ramaphosa-Job Mokgoro alliance in the province.”

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West said it was not convinced that disbandment of the PEC in North West would solve the problems and plight of the people in the province.

“While President Cyril Ramaphosa and Premier Job Mokgoro are supposed to fix the multiple problems of corruption, mismanagement and poor governance, they choose to spend their energy on ANC internal politicking,”  said provincial leader Joe McGluwa.

“Since the intervention into North West and the departure of Supra Mahumapelo, the failing ANC is not doing anything to fix what was broken by years of ANC looting and lying.
“The ANC’s cracks can no longer be concealed and the power struggles between the Ramaphosa and Zuma factions within the province is robbing the people of growth, employment and service delivery,” he said.

McGluwa said the ANC was at war with itself to the detriment of suffering communities.

ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule announced on Friday that the North West provincial executive committee has been disbanded.

A provincial task team has been set up. Current provincial premier Job Mokgoro will act as convener.

The entire North West province was placed under administration earlier this year following protests over the state of service delivery.
