Spain plunged into turmoil with firing of coach two days before World Cup opener


MOSCOW, June 13 (ANA) – Two days before their opening World Cup match, Spain have fired coach Julen Lopetegui after he was named the new Real Madrid boss.

Real Madrid made the announcement on Tuesday, and Spain moved swiftly to remove Lopetegui saying the Spanish federation had not been consulted during the process.

The World Cup begins on Thursday, with Spain playing their first game against Portugal on Friday.

Spain sporting director Fernando Hierro will now be in charge for the World Cup.
